  • 1803 - Thomas Moore builds a box-within-a-box for the sole purpose of preserving food and calls it the “refrigerator.”

  • The first self-contained room air conditioner is developed by General Electric.
  • The Ford Motor Company introduces an after market heater to “air condition your V-8.”

  • Buick introduces the first electric turn signals in 1938.

1940s

  • Motorola develops an early form of the cell phone - two-way radios called “Walkie Talkies.”
  • During World War II Yale installs oil heating systems for barracks at Camp McCoy in Wisconsin.

1950s

  • Room air conditioner sales exceed one million units with demand still exceeding supply.
  • The first “rooftop” combination gas heating and electric cooling units are installed on the rooftops of low-rise commercial buildings.
  • Yale installs one of the first large central air conditioning systems in the Leamington Hotel in downtown Minneapolis.
  • Yale designs the first “Hot-Gas-By-Pass” system and “Ambient Lock-Out” control used in refrigeration systems.
  • Yale moves to Clinton Avenue, South Minneapolis.
  • 1958 - Cruise Control is first offered in the Chrysler Imperial, New Yorker and Windsor car models.

1960s

  • Only 11% of all cars sold in the US are equipped with air conditioning.
  • Air conditioning plays a vital role in John Glenn's mission as the first American to orbit the earth.
  • Yale manufactures, patents, installs and services the “MYNAIR” spot coolers used around the world to condition space for mine workers.
  • Yale forms a team of design/build contractors for turnkey design and installation of clean rooms for the computer and aerospace industry.
  • Yale creates the indoor/dry sump system to enable year-round operation of water cooled air conditioning equipment.
  • 1968 - The world's first electromechanical automotive air bag system is created.

  • The Federal Trade Commission introduces the “Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency” (AFUE) rating system, which rates furnaces based on efficiency.

  • Yale designs and installs Minnesota's first central water source heat pump system.
  • 1978 - The first completely electronic 4-wheel multi-channel anti-lock brake system is installed in trucks and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

1980s

  • 1981 - The IBM Personal Computer (PC) is introduced.
